Managing concerns about doctors & teams – special workshops for HR teams and Medical Managers

One of the biggest challenges for any Clinical Leader, Medical Manager or Medical Educator is tackling concerns about individual doctors, or difficulties within clinical teams.

The majority of such concerns relate to behavioural issues, including poor working relationships, conflict, poor teamworking, personality clashes and resistance to change.

The aim of the workshop

Edgecumbe offers workshops specially designed to provide strategies for managing these situations, and to identify other appropriate routes to help if local resolution fails.

The aim of our one day workshops is to enable those who lead, manage and educate doctors to address concerns about doctors and teams with greater knowledge, skill and confidence.

Learning objectives

The workshop enables participants to develop:

  • Further insights into the underlying causes of performance difficulties (with emphasis on behavioural and personality factors)
  • Strategies and skills for handling concerns about doctors or teams
  • Ways of detecting and acting on early warning signs
  • Clarity about their role, and when to escalate the problem
  • Knowledge about alternative sources of help – and when to access these.

Format of the workshops

  • This is a one day workshop for a recommended maximum of 15 participants, with 2 tutors from Edgecumbe, working in plenary and in small groups
  • The emphasis is on case-based discussion, latest evidence and theory, and practical skills and strategies
  • Case studies and other material can be tailored for trainees and/or senior doctors

Please note: We can tailor the workshop to focus either on individual doctors, clinical teams, or a combination of both.

Who will benefit from the workshop?

  • Medical and Clinical Directors
  • Directors of HR and Workforce Development
  • Lead Clinicians
  • Directorate Managers
  • Directors of Clinical Governance (or equivalent)
  • Training Programme Directors

"The course more than lived up to our expectations. My clinical colleagues in particular were impressed with the academic background and analytical approach, which rapidly eliminated any hint of scepticism. Many of us recognised the personality and behavioural traits you described as well as the organisational problems that can lead to dysfunctional teams and poor performance. Your constructive approach to dealing with these difficult issues was valued."
