Tackling troubled teams: skills in managing, mediating and resolving conflict

Working in a high-stress environment can put intolerable strain on teams and team-working. Once relationships start to deteriorate, it requires swift and skilful action to put the team back on track.

Too often, however, the problems are swept under the carpet – only to fester and re-surface later on. Tackling difficulties early is essential to prevent a more serious problem later.

Edgecumbe has a national reputation for its work with clinical teams in difficulty and has worked with a very wide range of teams in different Trusts and specialties, supporting teams through a range of different interpersonal problems.

This workshop draws from our experience, as well as evidence and best practice in the field, to give those who manage and work in clinical team some skills and increased confidence to tackle team difficulties.

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Understand more about team dynamics - what makes teams effective and ineffective
  • Learn about the "anatomy" of a conflict – how it surfaces and how it escalates
  • Develop some skills, strategies and techniques for handling team conflict at different stages
  • Work on some "real" scenarios
  • Identify their own individual style of managing conflict – what works, what doesn’t, and what to improve
