Feeling safer

Having heard GPs concerns about the disruption to continuity of care following the introduction of pooled patients and letters to central referrals rather to a named consultant, last week’s news about the (re)introduction of a named GP for elderly patients is welcome from many perspectives. From a psychological perspective specifically, having a sense of ownership and responsibility about a patient together with the legitimate authority to arrange care, is very important to an individual doctor’s sense of effectiveness. It puts the doctor back in control rather than leaving the patient’s fate to the system.  Anxiety and concern the doctor may have felt at having so little control is at least contained by a feeling they can make a difference. While not wanting to ignore the pressure of a busy clinical work load and demanding paper work this (not revolutionary) idea puts the patient first and by doing so supports the doctor’s own sense of sense of wellbeing and effectiveness. Now all that needs to happen is for the system to work too so the support services can be accessed!
